Mount Rinjani Trekking Adventure
For adventure seekers, trekking to the summit of Mount Rinjani is the ultimate challenge. The 3,726-meter active volcano offers rugged terrain that tests even experienced trekkers. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned hiker, our expert and licensed guides will safely accompany you on every step of the journey. Lombok became world-famous after the publication of early tourism directories. Its name even comes from the Indonesian word lombok, meaning chili pepper. The island sits 8° south of the equator, stretching roughly 80 km from west to east and north to south.
Mount Rinjani National Park
Mount Rinjani is the third-highest volcano in Indonesia. Its massive caldera holds Segara Anak crater lake, 600 meters below the rim, with a new volcanic cone rising in the center. The last eruption was in 1994, and fresh lava flows and sulfur vents are still visible around the inner crater. The mountain and surrounding forest are protected as Mount Rinjani National Park, a key part of the Wallacea transition zone. Here, Southeast Asian flora and fauna meet species typical of Australasia. Wildlife is present but often hidden by dense rainforest. Early mornings may reveal the rare ebony leaf monkey or Lutung. Long-tailed macaques, rusa deer, barking deer, and wild boar are also found along the trekking trails.
Other Adventures in Lombok
Beyond Rinjani, Lombok offers excellent rainforest hiking and nature tours. The cool highland village of Tetebatu is famous for its rice terraces, waterfalls, and diverse rainforest. Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfalls in Central Lombok are popular stops and alternative starting points for Rinjani treks. In the northwest, Pusuk Pass Monkey Forest offers a short, scenic trek through a protected forest.
Rinjani Trekking Routes
Over 20 villages surround Mount Rinjani, but the two main trekking routes start from Senaru and Sembalun.
Senaru Route: Best for exploring Segara Anak Lake and the crater formed by a massive eruption centuries ago. The trail is less steep and ideal for first-time trekkers.
Sembalun Route: The preferred route for summit attempts. It crosses open savanna grasslands and offers a more direct path to the 3,726-meter peak.
Both routes showcase stunning landscapes, including edelweiss flowers, palm civets, and porcupines. Most treks take 2D1N or 3D2N, combining lake, hot springs, and summit options.
