Komodo National Park

tour komodo

Komodo National Park is home to dozens of islands with pink and white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and dramatic hills perfect for trekking. It is Indonesia’s premier destination for wildlife and marine adventures, and the only place on Earth where you can see Komodo dragons in the wild.

Komodo Island Location
Komodo National Park sits off the coast of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, about 40 km from Labuan Bajo, West Flores. The three main islands are Komodo, Rinca, and Padar, surrounded by dozens of smaller islands worth exploring. Labuan Bajo is the main gateway to the park. The town has a domestic airport, Komodo Airport, plus a wide range of hotels and restaurants serving seafood, Indonesian, and Western cuisine.

How to Get to Komodo Island
Labuan Bajo is the only access point for Komodo tours. From here, travelers join trips by speedboat or overnight cabin boat. Flights to Labuan Bajo run daily from Bali in about 1.5 hours, and from other major Indonesian cities. Several airlines offer different fare options to suit your budget.

Pink Beach
Pink Beach is one of Komodo’s most famous snorkeling spots. The rare pink sand comes from crushed red coral mixed with white sand, created by the microscopic organism Foraminifera. Just offshore, you can snorkel over shallow reefs teeming with colorful fish in crystal-clear turquoise water. Located in a secluded bay on the northern coast of Padar Island, Pink Beach feels like a hidden paradise. If you prefer not to snorkel, you can relax on the sand and take in the stunning views. Many 2D1N Komodo tours include an overnight stay near Pink Beach, where you can stargaze and see the Milky Way from the boat’s deck.

Trekking with Komodo Dragons
The main highlight of Komodo National Park is seeing Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Both Komodo Island and Rinca Island offer excellent chances to spot them. You’ll be accompanied by a licensed park ranger on a flat, easy trek suitable for all ages. While you can observe them up close, touching or taking selfies with the dragons is not allowed for safety reasons.

Swimming with Manta Rays at Manta Point
Another unforgettable experience is snorkeling with manta rays at Manta Point. The crew will spot the mantas from the boat and guide you into the water for a safe encounter. Mornings and midday are the best times to visit, as the currents are calmer and the mantas often feed near the surface.

Relax on Kanawa Island
Kanawa Island is a small paradise surrounded by white sand beaches and clear water. It’s perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling right off the pier. You can also enjoy fresh fruit and local dishes at the island’s simple restaurants.

Padar Island
Padar Island offers one of the most iconic views in Southeast Asia. A 30-minute trek up stone stairways leads to the summit, where you’ll see a dramatic X-shaped island with three bays of black, white, and pink sand. It’s the best spot for sunrise in Komodo National Park.

Rinca Island
Rinca Island is another prime location to see wild Komodo dragons. The landscape is drier and hillier than Komodo Island, offering equally impressive scenery and wildlife encounters. Always follow your ranger’s instructions for safety.

Kelor Island
Kelor Island is known for its white sand beach that stretches into the sea, best viewed from the hilltop. It’s a great stop for short trekking, swimming, and photo opportunities on most Komodo tour itineraries.
