You will reach the summit on the second day. After exploring the summit, descend to Segara Anak crater lake. The Rinjani trekking program ends at Senaru Village.  

Rinjani trekking itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival – Senggigi

Meeting service at Lombok International airport then drive down to Senggigi for hotel accomodation.

Day 2 : Senggigi - Sembalun Village - Plawangan Sembalun II 2.639 MASL

Estimated walking duration : 7-9 hours | Elevation gain : 1.483 metres

Early in the morning the guide picks you up at the hotel then drives down to Sembalun 1.156 MASL. After having breakfast, register at the Rinjani Trekking Centre. The trek starts at 09.00. 

The first day of Rinjani trekking passes 4 main posts.

Post 1 Pemantauan 1.300 MASL : 2 hours from the gate. opened savana, the weather is quite hot. Prepare your hat, sunglasses and sunscreen cream.

Post 2 Tengengean 1.500 MASL : 1 hour. The last shade spot before ascending. 

Post 3 Pada Balong 1.800 MASL : 1.5 hour. Trek up to Plawangan. 

Plawangan Sembalun II 2.639 MASL : 3-4 hours climbing through “Tanjakan Penyesalan”, the regretful hill. Go on an uphill trek on the open and wide trekking view.

We will reach Plawangan II in the afternoon. We camp at the edge of the crater with a direct view of Segara anak lake, “Gunung Baru Jari”, the newly formed hill, and the panorama of tomorrow’s route to the summit. The night temperature is between 5 to 10°C. The wind blows quite hard. Dinner and take a rest earlier.

Day 3 : Plawangan II - The peak of Mt. Rinjani 3.726 MASL - Segara Anak lake 2.008 MASL

Estimated walking duration : 10-12 hours | Elevation gain : 1.087 metres, Descent : 1.718 metres

The third day is the hardest day, however it will be an amazing and memorable time. The summit conquest starts at 02.00 midnight. The trek takes 3 – 4 hours on the volcanic sands and gravel. The push is very tough. Two steps up, 1 step slide back. We will reach the top 3.726 MASL by sunrise time. If the weather is clear Gili Air, Meno, Lombok, Bali, and Sumbawa islands can be seen.

At 07.00 we walk down to Plawangan II to have breakfast and packing. Continue descending to Segara Anak lake 2008 MASL. The walk takes 3 – 4 hours. The descending route is sandy and steepy. You may take a bath at Aik Kalak natural hot spring, fishing, or just relaxing. We camp overnight by the lake. It is a comfortable night as the temperature is a little bit warm, 10-15°C.

Day 4 : Segara anak lake - Plawanan Senaru - Senaru village 601 MASL

Estimated walking duration : 5 – 7 hours | Elevation loss : 1.407 metres.

Enjoy the sunrise around the lake. After having breakfast, trek up to Plawangan Senaru on the height of 2.641 MASL. The trek takes 2.5 hours. From this spot we can see the trails that will be passed, the dense tropical forest. Furthermore, proceed on walking down for approximately 4-5 hours passing through post 3, post 2, and post 1 Senaru. Rinjani trekking program finishes at Senaru village in the afternoon. Before returning to the hotel we still have a chance to see Sendang Gile waterfall. 

Day 5 : Departure

The day is free at leisure while waiting for airport transfer to onward the trip to the next destination. Ends of  Rinjani trekking program.

Essential Tips for the Rinjani Trekking Program

1. Be in peak physical condition : Train by climbing stairs with a 5 kg load at least 3X per week for 1 month.

2.Trekking poles are highly recommended:They’re a lifesaver during the summit push & the slippery descent to Senaru.

3. Dress in layers : Temperatures range from 32°C in the savanna to 2°C at the summit. Bring a down jacket.

4. Power bank : There’s no signal or electricity for 3 days. Bring at least 20,000 mAh.

1. What is the total trekking distance ? It is around 36 km with a total elevation gain of 2,570 metres.

2. Which is more demanding : the 2 days 1 night or 3 days 2 nights Rinjani trekking ?

The 3D/2N trekking is more manageable since it includes a recovery day at Segara Anak Lake. The 2 days 1 night trek is tougher as you have to climb up the summit on day 1 and complete a long descent on day 2.

3. When is Mount Rinjani closed ?

Mount Rinjani is typically closed from January to March due to the rainy season and extreme weather. The official opening season is from April to December.
